According to the reports, separatist Yasin Malik to be produced for the trial in Jammu TADA court today, (October 23), in connection with the case of killing four Indian Air Force officers back in 1990. The fact that it took 30 years to bring separatist like Yasin Malik to the court of law in such a sensitive case is an unfortunate commentary on the administration before the Modi government.
In fact, whenever any discussion about Yasin Malik crops up, a particular image rather haunts Indian. It is the image available in the public domain that shows separatist Yasin Malik shaking hands with Manmohan Singh. When it created a controversy, it was argued that the photo was not taken at the time when Singh was the PM but much before, a claim hardly anyone readies to buy considering the low political profile of Dr Singh before he became PM. From those days when placating separatists and overlooking their terror activities were normal for Indian administration, India has travelled towards a new normal of zero tolerance to terrorism and all-out support to the security forces post-2014.
Separatists like Yasin Malik was invited to hold talks with governments and their demands were regularly addressed back in the UPA era. Under such circumstances, how could one expect any action against Yasin Malik, who among many of his alleged crimes and terror was suspected to be behind the killing of four IAF officers in a broad daylight?
Business Standard reported citing the ‘Aap ki Adalat’ TV show, where Yasin Malik himself had explained why PM Manmohan Singh reached out to him. Malik said:
“I had a meeting with Manmohan Singh in 2006 in which I told him that the government should involve militant leadership in peace talks.”
Then, without any hesitation, he had said he went to “Azad Kashmir” in Pakistan and visited Lashkar-e-Taiba camp where its leader Hafiz Saeed organised a felicitation event. “I addressed the Lashkar cadres there.”
The questions that why Yasin Malik is not taken to task for openly meeting terrorists like Hafiz Saeed had fallen on the deaf ears of the UPA government.
Even at this point, there are supporters of Yasin Malik in Congress party.
The present administration has taken a series of measures to eliminate terrorists and their funding in Jammu and Kashmir. The separatists, who earlier enjoyed red carpet from the state, are now facing the law for their links with terror organizations. Ministry of Home Affairs has listed all the strong actions it took against the terror infrastructure in the valley. The points that deal with Yasin Malik are here:
- Jammu & Kashmir Liberation Front led by Yasin Malik has spearheaded the separatist ideology in the valley and has been at the forefront of separatist activities and violence since 1988. Murders of Kashmiri Pandits by JKLF in 1989 triggered their exodus from the valley. Yasin Malik was the mastermind behind the purging of Kashmiri Pandits from the Kashmir valley and is responsible for their genocide.
- This organisation is responsible for the murder of 4 Indian Air Force personnel and the kidnapping of Dr. Rubaiya Sayeed (daughter of the then Home Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed). JKLF is actively involved in raising of funds and its distribution to Hurriyat cadres and stone-pelters to fuel unrest in the Kashmir valley as well as for subversive activities.
- Activities of JKLF (Y) pose a serious threat to the security of the country as it has been actively and continuously encouraging, feelings of enmity and hatred against the lawfully established Government as well as armed rebellion.
- 37 FIRs have been registered by J&K Police against JKLF. Two cases including the case of murder of IAF personnel were registered by CBI. NIA has also registered a case, which is under investigation.
The spirit of pursuing justice is reflected in the recent media headlines.
