The Claim of SAD About BJP Not Consulting NDA Allies – Fact Checked

NDA meeting

Parting ways is a hard process. More often than not a partner who steps out uses all his/her energy to tell how evil that the other was. This always makes the other wonder why the claimant held on to that relationship all these while if things were supposedly so bad.

The Shiromani Akali Dal – Badal (SAD) walked out of the BJP led NDA alliance the other day on the pretext of its opposition to farm bills and agriculture reforms. Though the reservations against farm bills have no factual basis, it would have been gracious on the part of the SAD if it had stuck to that particular reason for parting ways with NDA. However, it seems that the SAD chose to leave on a distasteful note.

Claims by SAD

According to a report in The Indian Express, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal said that “for the last 7, 8, 10 years or so, the NDA is just in name. There is nothing in the NDA. No discussion, no planning, no meetings. I don’t remember a day in last 10 years when the Prime Minister called an NDA meeting for lunch to discuss what they have in mind.”

Facts About NDA Meet

The problem with Badal’s statement is that it can be easily fact-checked through newspaper reports that have been written about various consultation meets of NDA in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took part. If the claim of the SAD was that “NDA alliance partners were not consulted enough”, then we could treat that as matter of opinion. But Badal categorically says that in last 10 years he could not recall any such meetings. It seems to be a problem of temporary amnesia with the SAD as these headlines unveil the fact.

The next report dated 2017 from The Hindu notes that “Former Punjab Chief Minister and Akali stalwart Parkash Singh Badal will be present”. Then another report confirms that SAD did take part in that meet.

Another report talks about the NDA meet that happened in May 2019 in which PM Modi was present.

Conclusion

It is apparent that the SAD wants to project BJP leadership as some sort of dictatorship that does not consult its allies. But the facts as they stand above don’t seem to support the claim of the SAD.
