Delhi Violence, Fighting Pandemic, Nation’s Progress in Numbers – Key Takeaways from the President’s Speech

In his speech to both houses of the Parliament at the beginning of the Budget session 2021, the President of India Ramnath Kovind listed the accomplishments of the government, especially in a difficult year hit by the pandemic.

While acknowledging that farmers or any other group has the right to hold peaceful protests, the President of India cautioned against going overboard. “The insult to the Tricolour on Republic Day is very unfortunate. The Constitution that gives us the right to freedom of expression, is the same Constitution that teaches us that law and rule should be followed equally seriously,” the President told the Parliament.

The Numbers That Tell the Progress
  • 2 crore houses built since 2014 for the poor families living in villages
  • In 2013-14, only 42 lakh hectares of land was under micro-irrigation whereas today, more than 56 lakh hectares of land has been brought under micro-irrigation.
  • In 2008-09, the food grain production in the country was 234 million tonnes, whereas in 2019-20, the production has increased to 296 million tonnes.
  • About Rs 1,13,000 crore have been directly transferred to their bank accounts under Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi.
  • Under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana, in the last 5 years, about Rs 90,000 crore has been paid as compensation to the farmers against a premium of Rs 17,000 crore.
  • Under the MUDRA scheme, more than 25 crore loans have been sanctioned so far, of which nearly 70% have been given to women entrepreneurs.

Handling Corona

President of India Ramnath Kovind in his speech also said that “It is a matter of pride that India is running the biggest vaccination program in the world. Both vaccines of this program are made in India. In this crisis India shouldered its responsibility towards mankind & provided lakhs of doses of vaccines to several nations.” He also noted that “Today the number of new COVID cases is going down rapidly. The number of recoveries is very high.”

Taking Care of Poor in Times of Pandemic

President Kovind noted that during the early stages of the pandemic phase ₹31,000 crore was transferred to Jan Dhan accounts of poor women as a relief measure; over 14 crore gas cylinders were distributed for free under the Ujjwala scheme; and free food grain of 5 kg/month per person for 8 months was distributed under ‘Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana’ among other things. The government also showed sensitivity to the needs of migrant workers, workers and people living away from their homes.

On Security and Defence

President Kovind, without naming China, mentioned the aggression at the border and said that the brave soldiers of India have acted to defend India.

While appreciating the soldiers at the border, he also acknowledged the reduction in violence in North East region.

Emerging Future

Calling upon citizens to work for the realisation of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, President Kovind at various point of his speech touched upon the future India that is unravelling. He mentioned infrastructure projects, construction of new Parliament, and the momentum gained in building a grand Ram temple at Ayodhya.
