PM Modi Addresses SCO Summit, Delivers Strong Message on Territorial Integrity

territorial integrity

PM Modi virtually addressed the annual summit of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). In his 9-minute address, he delivered a strong message on need of SCO members to respect each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, and also highlighted India’s role in combating COVID-19 pandemic worldwide. It is pertinent to note here that both China and Pakistan are members of the SCO.

Here are the key takeaways of PM Modi’s speech:

Strong Message Against China and Pakistan
  • India strongly believes in peace, security and prosperity and has always voiced opposition to terrorism, illegal arms smuggling, drugs and money laundering
  • However, it is unfortunate that repeated attempts are being made to unnecessarily bring bilateral issues into the SCO agenda that violate the SCO Charter and Shanghai Spirit. Such efforts are contrary to the spirit of consensus and cooperation that defines SCO
  • India has strong cultural and historical ties with Shanghai Cooperation Organisation countries. India believes that to enhance connectivity it is important that we move forward while respecting one another’s sovereignty and territorial integrity
India’s Helping Hand to The Word in Times of Pandemic
  • In this very difficult time of unprecedented epidemic, India’s pharma industry has sent essential medicines to more than 150 countries
  • As the world’s largest vaccine producing country, India will use its vaccine production and distribution capacity to help the entire humanity in fighting this crisis
Need for Reformed Multilateralism
  • The United Nations has completed its 75 years. But despite many successes, the basic goal of the United Nations is still incomplete
  • The world, struggling with the economic and social suffering of the epidemic is expected to bring about a complete change in the system of the UN
  • A reformed multilateralism that reflects today’s global realities, discussing topics such as expectations of all stakeholders, contemporary challenges, and human welfare is needed
