The Year 2019 is going to be an important year as the country will decide the fate of India’s first majority government of 21st century led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Before India goes to polls to elect the next Prime Minister of India, we take a look at some of the major benefits that an average Indian Family got after electing the Modi Government in 2014.
We consider an economically weaker family, and below names are only hypothetical characters and any resemblance to the reality is purely coincidental.
Rajeev and Ragini have always dreamt of giving a good life to their children. Rajeev was aging quickly and left his job of a servant in a private shop. He did not have much savings. A major part of his salary was spent on fulfilling the daily needs of his family. His wife Ragini always wanted her own house instead of living in a rented place.
Since 2013, there were almost daily quarrels between the couple. Then, a friend of Rajeev guided him about ‘Credit Linked Interest Subsidy’ scheme under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). Using this component of PMAY, wherein the subsidy pay-out on NPV basis would be about Rs.2.3 lakh per house, Rajeev constructed a house bringing the biggest joy of life to his wife Ragini.
When Ragini entered the house and heard her husband saying that how government has contributed to their house. She felt empowered. They got a subsidy to construct a toilet under Swacch Bharat. Rajeev informed Ragini that their house got an electricity connection only for Rs 500 under Saubhagya Scheme, which will be paid in 10 installments along with their electricity bill. He also added that not only electricity connection, they have also got the subsidized LED lights for their house under Ujala Scheme.
Rajeev went back to his friend for thanking him. His friend told him that this is only one of the many other welfare schemes under Modi government. To get access to others, all you need to do is to get your identification correct. Get the Aadhaar card and take benefits of most of the schemes. Rajeev quickly got his entire family their Aadhaar cards as the process was made easier and simpler after 2014.
Next entitlement that they got from the Government was their inclusion in the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and his family started getting highly subsidized coarse grains/wheat/rice grains at Rs.1/2/3 per kg respectively. Ragini was shocked to see that how they started getting ration from Fair Price Shops (aka Control) as she never received it before! Then, her sister told her about the fact that after seeding of Aadhaar Card with the Ration Card, many fake beneficiaries have been deleted and only genuine beneficiaries have been included in the system, that is why Ragini is now getting the highly subsidised grains.
Ragini then asked her sister about what other benefits she can get for her kitchen from the government. Her sister’s reply brought a big smile to her face as she said that now Ragini can get a free LPG cylinder under Pradhan Mantri Ujjawala Yojana. Tears rolled down her cheeks when she thought that now she will be able to cook on the gas stove fitted with the LPG cylinder, and from now onwards she would not need the earthen stove (chulha). She would no longer have to deal with arduous breathing and constant coughing as her kitchen actually became a gas chamber when she cooked on chulha.
One day, Rajeev complained of severe stomach ache and pointed his finger to one card kept in the drawer of a table. Ragini took her husband to the nearby hospital thinking how she will get the money for his treatment without realising what card she was carrying with her. It was only after doctors discharged her recovered husband without charging them a penny, she got to know that her husband already has got the entire family insured up to Rs. 5 lakh/ year under Ayushman Bharat.
Ragini told her husband that how intelligent and caring he is that he thought about his family and got them covered for unexpected unplanned medical expenses. Rajeev smilingly replied that it is not only he but also the Government of India who made their life tension-free. He told his wife, this is not over yet, in case of need they can now buy quality medicines at affordable prices from the nearby Jan Aushadhi Kendras.
Another thing that worried Rajeev and Ragini was the education of their children. They were really apprehensive about the cut throat competition and how Rahul (son) and Rohini (daughter) will get a good education and jobs.
Rahul was a bright student and told her parents that now the government has expanded the number of educational institutes in the country, such as Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) among others, which has further amplified the chances of selection. As Rahul shared this information, his parents were relieved.
But, Rahul had different plans in his life and was not really interested in getting a job. He wanted to be an entrepreneur. However, Rohini, their daughter, a talented athlete, wanted to serve the nation not only as a sportsperson but also by joining the Indian Armed Forces.
One evening, their son Rahul came home shouting, Maa, I have got a loan under Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana to start up my business. He sat down with his family and started explaining them about the benefits of start-ups and how easily he got the loan from the government. He informed them that:
- Government has made doing business easier in India.
- There are now a number of rebates available for start-ups.
- Digitisation of India under Digital India is happening so fast that his online business will expand rapidly.
His father Rajeev nodded his head permitting him to start his own business even before he could complete the list of government interventions for supporting businesses in India.
Rahul, who for the first time got his parents’ bank accounts opened under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana, was also very supportive of his sister Rohini. Rohini, a talented athlete in school, was selected among 1178 sports talents across country, under Khelo India Scheme. Under this scheme, government will spend Rs. 5 lakh/year over the next 8 years, so that her talent gets polished and she can become a world-class athlete.
Rohini usually tells her mother Ragini not only about her sports events but also about common day-day things, like how easy it has become for girls in schools after a separate toilet has been built under Swacch Vidyalaya. They now feel better and empowered. She told her mother that she need not to worry about her when she is out of home. She has installed Himmat App on her mobile which will help her in emergency situations.
Once Rahul’s start up started flourishing, he got married to Rachna, a working woman. A year later, Rachna gave birth to a daughter, Priyanka. Ragini was worried as to how her daughter-in-law will manage her work along with baby. But, Rachna told her that she need not to worry about it as now she has 26 weeks of paid maternity leave. Ragini smiled and pondered over as to how responsive government has become towards every aspect of life. Their overall quality of life has improved significantly!
Then, Ragini who was by now aware of a number of government’s public welfare schemes, including Beti Bachao Beti Padhao got Sukanya Samridhi account opened for her grand-daughter, in which the rate of interest is 9.2%, which will be compounded annually. She also got Priyanka vaccinated against 7 life-threatening diseases under Mission Indradhanush.
Before the Diwali festival, the whole family went outside for shopping. Rachna, Rahul, and Rohini were busy shopping for new clothes and articles from the nearby market. To every shop they went, they quickly made all the payment. Parents who were seeing this were absolutely amazed as to how they were not at all using any cash and were just taking out their phones to make the payment at the shops. Rajeev surprisingly asked his son as to what exactly was happening. Rahul smilingly told his father that it was nothing but the BHIM App that government has launched. Using this app, they can make seamless payments.
Then, the family went to have dinner at a restaurant. Rahul informed his mother that recently after the government brought in Goods & Services Tax (GST), tax on restaurant bill has come down to 5% which was around 20% earlier. He further added that inflation has come down in recent times. Rajeev supported his son’s statement and added that inflation is now just around 3% which was around 10% before 2014.
After their shopping and dinner, the whole family was relaxing back at home. Rajeev told Ragini whether she remembers the Ayushman Bharat Card. Just like that card, he has insured himself under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Yojana also. Under this scheme, in case of his death, the family will get a payment of Rs 2 lakh. He added that he has insured Ragini also under this scheme.
On a bright Sunday morning, the whole family was sitting together and looking back at their lives. Ragini said that their journey from an economically weaker family to a family with better standard of living would not have been possible without various government interventions. Ragini further reiterated that she voted for the right government, a government that is by the people, for the people and of the people. The whole family looked at each other optimistically and decided to vote for the right government in 2019 elections as well.
