According to news reports, complaints lodged with the Election Commission alleging discrepancies and omissions in poll affidavits filed by Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray, his son and minister Aditya Thackeray have been referred to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) for investigation.
While the Thackerays have responded to this development saying that “it is a routine cross-check by the Election Commission”, there are many unanswered questions. Here are the reasons that have led to questions on the possible financial irregularities by the father-son duo.
The complaints note multiple discrepancies found in election affidavits filed by both Uddhav Thackeray and Aditya Thackeray to the Maharashtra State Election Commission.
Among discrepancies in the affidavit, Uddhav Thackeray mentions in his affidavit that he brought shares of Maruti Suzuki on 23rd June, 2003 as part of Hindu undivided family (HUF), but Aditya Thackeray shows it as 14th June, 2003.
This raises a question – do the son and father even speak to each other while filing important affidavits regarding their financial transactions? Or is this a deliberate attempt to confuse authorities to hide their financial irregularities?
While Uddhav Thackeray’s affidavit says he took over shares of Betala global security on 07/07/2002, Aditya Thackeray’s affidavit states these shares were brought before 2001. Thackeray junior filed this in October of 2019, while Uddhav filed his affidavit in May of 2020. Within 8 months how can such a large discrepancy in date come up?
Same is the case with shares of GTL limited and MEUSE KARA&SUNGRANCE MAFATAL LTD. Huge discrepancy in dates have been found, even though father and son filed affidavits within 8 months of each other. Uddhav Thackeray claims he purchased shares of GT Limited on 30th of July, 2007 but Aditya Thackeray claims it was brought on 30th of July, 2003. Which year is it exactly?
Similarly, Uddhav mentions buying MEUSE KARA&SUNGRACE shares on 11th March, 2011, but Aaditya Thackeray who filed his affidavit 8 months prior shows it as 21st December, 2006.
It is important to note that lying on election affidavits is a crime under Sec 125 A of representation of people Act.
