Fact Check

Here is the Mahagathbandhan for You: Speaks 1 Lie Every 6 Minutes

Mahagathbandhan leaders lies

This article is a part of the series on the so-called grand alliance of opposition parties.
Part 1: The Lies of Mahagathbandhan
Part 2: The Kundli of Mahamilawat
Part 3: Mahamilawat: Confusion and Contradictions

The so-called Mahagathbandhan recently held its rally at Kolkata where they projected themselves to be the next possible government of India.

With that as background, we attempted to analyse the leaders of Mahagathbandhan and their speeches. We covered 18 leaders of the Mahagathbandhan and found that they (10 of them) spoke 20 outright lies in their speeches. At the same time, there were many rhetorical lies and misleading claims in the speeches. However, we have only included the factual lies.

Lies Spoken

In approximately 114 minutes long speech by 10 leaders that we covered, there were 20 outright lies (mentioned below) which comes to almost one lie being spoken approximately every 6 minutes.

1. M K Stalin

Claim 1: Have you got Rs 15 lakh?

Fact: PM Narendra Modi never made such a claim and this has already been fact-checked by many fact checkers. (Watch here)

Claim 2: Is Rafale deal not corruption?

Fact: Supreme Court of India has already cleared the smoke around it and gave a clean chit to the deal in its verdict.

Claim 3: Vijay Mallya fled the country after meeting Arun Jaitley, is it not corruption?

Fact: This has been factually clarified by the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley himself and also clarified by Vijay Mallya that it was not a formal meeting. Thus, there has been clarity on this issue and no news of corruption by Arun Jaitley ever came to light till the point this article was being written.

Claim 4: Petrol, diesel and all other prices have gone up.

Fact: The prices of petrol and diesel have in fact gone down. As for Inflation in general, India has witnessed Inflation coming down to 3-4% after 2014 from about 10% before 2014.

2. Sharad Yadav

Claim 5: Due to note ban and GST, nearly 7 crore people lost their jobs.

Fact: These are not official figures. There is no official study which corroborates the figures. In fact, it now appears that the figures on job losses are just being manufactured as part of a misinformation campaign as there are different figures from different leaders. In this Mahagathbandhan rally itself, there were widely different figures trotted out by different leaders:

According to Arvind Kejriwal – 1.25 Crore Job Losses

According to M Kharge – 1.60 Crore Job Losses

According to Sharad Yadav – 7 Crore Job Losses

Claim 6: They said they will give jobs to 2 crore people, but instead they have thrown them out of jobs.

Fact: The promise of 2 crore jobs has been found to be false by ABP news channel. The News channel in its investigation found that PM Modi never promised 2 crore jobs. (Watch here)

3. Chandra Babu Naidu

Claim 7: There is no MSP. They promised MSP, it is not happening.

Fact: MSP or Minimum Support Price has not only been continued by the present government but has been increased 1.5 times.

Claim 8: They promised also 2 crore jobs per year.

Fact: Already explained above.

Claim 9: This govt is not in a position to control price rise and so many things.

Fact: As explained above, India has witnessed Inflation coming down to 3-4% after 2014 from about 10% before 2014. About so many things, it sounds so vague anyways.

Claim 10: Even here (reference to Rafale Deal), they denied HAL, which is the premier organization of government of India. Now they have given it to Reliance which is having no experience.

Fact: It is not the government of India that gave the contract to Reliance, but Dassault which has chosen Reliance as its offset partner in India with Reliance being only one of many offset partners in India.

4. Jayant Chaudhary

Claim 11: Without farmer’s permission, money is being deducted from his account for insurance scheme (reference to PMFBY).

Fact: The premium under Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana is not being deducted without farmer’s permission. But this scheme is compulsory for those farmers who have taken institutional loans. The premium is highly subsidised anyway and which is not deducted without permission. The idea behind this is to establish a link between taking of loans and insurance in effect guaranteeing a cushion against possible inability to pay the loan.

5. Arvind Kejriwal

Claim 12: With demonetisation, 1.25 crore jobs have been lost.

Fact: These figures are being arrived at by some studies from private organisations and there is no official survey or report to authenticate them.

6. Jignesh Mevani

Claim 13: 2 crore job for youth were promised.

Fact: As explained above.

7. H D Kumaraswamy

Claim 14: GST has robbed the resource mobilization power of the state.

Fact:  GST or Goods & Services Tax has been enacted in such a way that the states have the power to vote in GST council meeting (about 66% vote share to states). Then how GST has robbed the states of their resource mobilization power defies any logic.

8. Mamata Banerjee

Claim 15: Rafale is a scandal.

Fact: As explained above.

Claim 16: 2 crore people lost jobs, where as you (reference to BJP) promised 2 crore jobs every year but not kept.

Fact: As explained above.

Claim 17: They (reference to BJP) will give 15 lakh to everyone.

Fact: As explained above.

9. Farooq Abdullah

Claim 18: There is no EVM anywhere in the world.

Fact: Brazil, one of the largest countries by population holds election through electronic voting machines.

10. Mallikarjun Kharge

Claim 19: Modiji in his election rally said that I will give 2 crore jobs.

Fact: As explained above.

Claim 20: Rafale is a scam and Rs. 30,000 crore has been given to Anil Ambani.

Fact: As explained above, the highest court of the country has already nailed this lie. Also, there is a series of fact-checking articles on Rafale and this Rs. 30,000 crore theory has been proved bogus time and again.

Since independence, the largest democracy in the world has had political leaders and parties of different hues – across ideologies.  But it is for the first time in the history of Independent India that such a blatantly opportunistic political alliance in the form of Mahagathbandhan is taking shape – spreading misinformation and falsehoods among people to come to power at any cost.

Fact check your “fact check”. Videos clearly show Modi promising 15L upon bringing back black money. SC did not give ‘clean chit’ to rafale, said it was out of its ambit. Difference much?
Didn’t bother to read the full article cos you already had 2 factual errors in less than 100 words. Even name of your site is a factual error. It is not True Picture, it is rather “The Right Picture”. If you get puns.
