Among many other issues that the general election 2019 was fought on, PM Modi and BJP’s constant pitch against the culture of privilege that is deeply entrenched in Congress ecosystem also a prominent one. Is this a mere topic to be raised during electioneering? Let us see.
A news pertaining to former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley testifies to BJP’s culture of public probity in contrast to the nature of Congress and its friends, who stood for a culture of self-granted privilege.
Reportedly, Arun Jaitley was quick to vacate the official bungalow besides surrendering his official cars and reducing the security cover. Considering the fact that the people cling onto the official residences in Lutyens Delhi even after several years of being out of office, Jaitley’s move makes an important statement with regard to probity in public life.
On a personal level, there are other such instances within BJP. Soon after the demise of the former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, his family had written to the PMO conveying their wish to give up the Krishna Menon Marg bungalow allotted to Vajpayee and shift to their private residence besides declining the SPG cover as well.
Establishing the Rule of Law
If the above-mentioned instances can be cited as individual gestures in maintaining the probity in public life, Modi government in its earlier period acted as per the rule book to vacate many politicians who were overstaying in Lutyens bungalows. This tough act had invited quite a wrath from the leaders who were forced to vacate the residences they were illegally staying on, but in the public discourse it had earned the ‘eviction man’ title for the then Union Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu. In fact, in the process of eviction the BJP government did not hesitate to act on its own members. Below are the headlines captured from those datelines which tell the story.
Culture of Entitlement Under UPA
Here is another set of headlines which tell a story of entitlement culture thrived under UPA. When NDA government in its first period tried to establish the rule of law in this regard, there had been a lot of resistance from the people who were accustomed to this culture. Nevertheless, as illustrated above, the Modi government has prevailed on the issue.
If all these were related to New Delhi circle, even in the state level the country had witnessed to the objectionable behavior from the person who held the post of Chief Minister in Uttar Pradesh. Akhilesh Yadav reportedly took water taps, decorative plants, electrical fittings by damaging swimming pool, cycle track, and kitchen while vacating the official residence in Lucknow.
In contrast to all such behaviours, not taking its massive mandate for granted, BJP government has been displaying the character where rule of law and probity in public life have been given their due significance.
