Post 2014 Khadi India- When Figures Tell a Success Story

The fact about the recent surge in the Khadi fabric sales has been well-accepted. It has become possible only because of the personal appeal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and various innovative steps taken by the NDA Government towards promoting Khadi and Village Industries Corporation (KVIC) as a whole. There are enough indicators available now to show that India’s Khadi story took off only after the Modi government came to power.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on many occasions has appealed prominently to the people of India to adopt Khadi clothing and products in their life, in his popular monthly Radio Show Mann Ki Baat. Through his speeches and social media engagements he has literally rebranded Khadi as a ‘fabric of today’. Perhaps, the most attractive rebranding slogan for Khadi came from the Prime Minister himself when he said, “Earlier it was only Khadi for Nation, now it is also Khadi for Fashion”.

So, in the background of all these instances, is there any outstanding outcome or the results are just incremental? We found out some hard numbers that settle the answer conclusively as they prove that the glorious chapter of Khadi India started only after various initiatives of the Modi government. KVIC has released Two Years+ Progress Report in which it has provided specific figures about Khadi from November 2015 to February 2018. It has also provided the comparative figures of 10 years period (2004-14) on various parameters. Comparing between the Khadi India numbers of two plus years and the ten years before that, one can safely arrive at the conclusion that, it is indeed a journey of transformation.

Khadi India Transformation in Numbers

A total 7,050 Khadi sales outlets were opened between 2004 and 2014 and as many as 1,008 sales outlets were added between 2015 and 2018, as shown in the below graph.

Average Khadi sales by departmental outlets between 2004 and 2014 stood at Rs 44.77 crore whereas the 2015-18 figure stood at Rs 120.09 crore, as shown in the graph below.

Moving out from the specific figures from departmental outlets, if we look at the Khadi Sector’s average sales, it was Rs 914.07 crore between 2004 and 2014 whereas between 2015 and 2018 it stood at 1,828.30 crore, as shown in the graph below.

Number of Charkhas distributed stood at 175 between 2004 and 2014 whereas between 2015 and 2018 the numbers stood at 30,767.

Even the export of KVIC product has significantly gone up post-2014 as the below graph explains.
The fact that the Khadi sector got an overhaul by the present government is well-reflected in the increase of Khadi institutions as shown in the graph.

Apart from the above indicators, there are some additional factors in Khadi Industry which was simply non- existent before the year 2014. For example:

  • The distribution of Solar Charkhas did not happen between 2004 and 2014. However, between 2015-18, as many as 2,063 Solar Charkhas were distributed.
  • There was no concept of Yoga Kit distribution before the year 2014. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi spearheaded the popularization of Yoga, KVIC has sold Rs 3.41 crore worth of Yoga kits post 2014.
Conclusion - Reflection of an All-Inclusive Effort

KVIC in its progress report has notified that a complete structural overhauling of the institution has taken place in the year 2015 after which it has been able to script the Khadi India success story. The government has also ensured that various ministries such as Railways and Health use Khadi products. All these illustrious Khadi India figures finally benefits the artisans and weavers, thereby strengthening the rural India. Thus, by branding Khadi as both, a fashion statement and as a contribution to the nation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inspired the people of India, especially youth in particular, to opt for Khadi products.
