The Congress party, from its official Twitter handle, tweeted the following.
In the above tweet, Congress quoted a story from Scroll which in its headline mentioned Nirmala Sitharaman, Finance Minister of India, saying that ‘’Demonetisation had no effect on the economy’’.
The Scroll story quoting Press Trust of India (PTI) report had said, “Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Wednesday claimed in the Rajya Sabha that demonetisation has had no effect on the economy and that growth remains a top priority of the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party government.”
But, did Nirmala Sitharaman say so? Let’s see.
The Scroll story was an automatic feed from the PTI which had run a story with this headline. Due to this automatic feed from PTI, many other media houses like NDTV also ran the story.
Where did this heading come from? Not certainly from my answer in the Rajya Sabha. Your story, based on my answer, also, does not have this line. Please watch my answer in the RS or read your copy(sourced from @PTI_News?) itself.

After Nirmala Sitharaman responded to NDTV that she never made such a claim. NDTV corrected itself apologizing to the minister and changed the headline of the story. NDTV has even raised the concerns of the minister with PTI.
We have checked the answers given by the Finance Minister, available on Rajya Sabha website and in no answer has she made the claim which Congress tweeted quoting the Scroll story.
In fact, in one of the answers, the Finance Minister has clearly mentioned that no government study has been undertaken to study the impact of demonetisation on the economy.
Thus, the confusions over Minister’s statement started from the erroneous PTI story. And, Congress seems to have spun it for its own political agenda.
