Arrest of Chidambaram Shows Long Hands of Law Can Reach Anyone

Last night, the entire country watched the drama by the former Union Minister P Chidambaram while making last-minute efforts to evade his arrest. Earlier he had absconded and later he had closed his gates to stop CBI sleuths from entering in. For those unaware of the latest events, Congress leader P Chidambaram has been arrested by the CBI on August 21, 2019 for his alleged role in INX Media case. CBI had issued a lookout notice after Chidambaram was denied anticipatory bail by the single judge bench of the Delhi High Court.

Denying the anticipatory bail, Delhi High Court Judge had observed, “facts of the case prima facie reveal that” he is the “kingpin that is the key conspirator in the case”, and he was evasive in replies to probe agencies when he was under protective cover given by the Court.

His arrest is not an ordinary event. Chidambaram is believed to be one of the most powerful politicians in India who is seen as someone with the ability to pressurise sections of bureaucracy, media, and judiciary.

Chidambaram had got protection for more than a year from arrest despite agencies asking for the same.

The significance of Chidambaram’s arrest can also be seen in the desperate attempts made by the Congress Party to save him. His arrest shows that nobody is untouchable for law. This arrest has broken the jinx that nothing can happen to you if you have money and power at your side.

Why does this worry the Congress?

P Chidambaram is not a mass leader for the Congress party. Yet, his arrest has caused panic in the top ranks of the party.

The possible reason for the panic seems to be fear of law catching up with other leaders like Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi who are out on bail. Even the Robert Vadra, the son-in-law of Gandhi family, is also accused in tainted land deals.

Both of them are accused in the National Herald case which is related to alleged misappropriation of funds and cheating. They are out on the bail. But after Chidambaram’s episode, warning bells would have gone off in the Congress’s office that even their interim President Sonia Gandhi and former President Rahul Gandhi are not immune to law of the land.

Robert Vadra

Robert Vadra, the son-in-law of the Nehru-Gandhi family is no stranger to alleged scams and controversies. Mr Vadra has been allegedly involved in several dubious dealings and transactions benefiting from the Congress party rule at the centre and in the states of Haryana and Rajasthan. The hearing of money laundering case related to him is scheduled on November 18, 2019.

The Congress ecosystem has already started changing the narrative. It is the Court which has rejected the anticipatory bail and the government has no role in it. After the rejection of the bail, standard procedure was to arrest him. But Congress leaders and their associates are painting it as misuse of CBI by the Modi government.

It should be noted here that Judge of the Delhi High Court has himself rejected the charge of political vendetta. According to a report by Bar and Bench, the Court said that “(It is) preposterous to say prosecution of the petitioner (P Chidambaram) is baseless, politically motivated and act of vendetta.”
