India’s First Multi-Modal Logistics Park to Be Set Up in Assam – All You Want to Know

multi-modal logistics park

When Bharat Mala was unveiled, it was not conceived as a mere highway building exercise. The focus has been to facilitate a seamless and economical way of logistics across the nation. So, multi-modal logistics parks are an important concept in Bharat Mala Pariyojana. Now, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has laid foundation stone for country’s first multi-modal logistics park at Jogighopa in Assam.

Nation’s First Multi-Modal Logistics Park

The ₹693.97 crore park will provide direct air, road, rail and waterways connectivity to the people. There are 35 multi-modal logistics parks that are proposed across the country. But the North-eastern state of Assam getting the first of its kind has its own significance. Considering the fact that India and Bangladesh have planned to develop multi-modal trade routes, Jogighopa will play a major role in the future.

The first multi-modal logistics park is being developed in 317-acre land along the Brahmaputra and the first phase of construction is scheduled to be completed by 2023. It is expected to provide direct or indirect employment to nearly 20 lakh youth in the State.

The distance of 154 km between Jogighopa and Guwahati will be covered by making a 4-lane road on this stretch. A 3-km rail line will connect Jogighopa station to this logistics park, another 3-km rail link will connect it to the Inland Water Terminal. The road to newly developed Rupsi airport will be upgraded to 4-lanes for easier connectivity.

The Significance of Logistics Parks

Lack of inter-modal mix, along with the under-utilization of fleet capacity, and less number of logistic hubs have led to lower logistic productivity and higher cost of movement of goods. Bharatmala aims to address these concerns by shifting the current modus operandi i.e. point-to-point freight movement to a hub-and-spoke model, as shown below.

Increase in logistics efficiency will ensure decongestion, reduction in transportation and storage costs, and lower pollution levels.

The multi-modal Logistics Parks will ideally have facilities like warehouse, railway siding, cold storage, custom clearance house, yard facility, workshops, petrol pumps, truck parking, administrative building, boarding lodging, eating joints, water treatment plant, etc.
