Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi and Aam Aadmi Party member Manish Sisodia today came out in support for the Shaheen Bagh protestors, saying that he stands with the people of Shaheen Bagh, and his government had no role to play in ensuring that the Kalindikunj road, closed for nearly forty days now, is opened.

Reiterating his party’s Opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Act 2019, Mr. Sisodia, in an interview to News 18 channel on their show Adhiveshan, Mr. Sisodia stated that his party has always been against CAA. “AAP has always been against CAA…we have opposed it in Parliament, I have opposed it in every rally and interview that I have done,” he told the channel.

The protestors in Shaheen Bagh in South-East Delhi have been demanding a complete rollback of the CAA, saying it is discriminatory against certain minority communities in India. However, the protests have been causing significant inconvenience to large number of people both in Delhi and in NOIDA in Uttar Pradesh. Delhi High Court had asked the Delhi Police to look into the matter of blockage of Kalindi Kunj road due to the protest at Shaheen Bagh, considering the plight of students traveling to schools and facing board examinations. This had come after the Court heard a representation of the Federation of Sarita Vihar Resident’s welfare association, who had moved the court stating how many students who are facing difficulties during board examinations as the area is closed since December 15, due to ongoing protests. Following this direction, the Delhi Police appealed to the protestors to to clear the road and restore normal traffic.

Members of the Aam Aadmi Party were accused by the media of inciting violent protests in Delhi against the CAA earlier last month. Sitting MLA of Okhla and former Minister of the Delhi Government Amanatullah Khan had been accused of speeches inciting violence in Shaheen Bagh, while another accused Abdul Rehman, is fighting as Aam Aadmi Party’s candidate in Seelampur, where he allegedly incited mob violence. Slogans demanding ‘Jinnah Waali Azadi’ were raised from the dais. Videos have also emerged claiming brainwashed children talking about taking the lives of Narendra Modi and Amit Shah.
